Sapient outlets and power strips periodically receive firmware updates (about once per month). These updates are done entirely via the Sapient cloud, and do not require any action on the part of technicians.

Firmware update notification emails are sent out to system administrators at least 48 hours ahead of the update. Occasionally, Sapient devices will need to switch plugged-in equipment off for a 2-second, momentary reset. In this case, the notifying email to system administrators will clearly state that users of the system should prepare sensitive equipment for a momentary power loss in the middle of the night.

Preparing for momentary power loss is as simple as ensuring that certain sensitive equipment is properly powered down before leaving for the day.

Examples of equipment that should be properly shut down before leaving are:

  • Desktop PCs
  • Actively-printing 3D printers
  • Electronic test equipment

Examples of equipment that do not need to be shut down before leaving are:

  • Computer monitors
  • TVs
  • Coffee makers
  • Laptops
  • Laser/ink jet printers
  • Nearly all other miscellaneous electronic equipment
